Looking back at all the years of family photos I can say while it was such a pain to coordinate calendars, purchase outfits and attempt for everyone to look at the camera at the same time (yeah right) I don’t regret doing them. Having these moments in time captured of our family is precious so let me help you with what I find the most stressful… OUTFITS!

We loved finally having some family photos in our new home of Denver with some leaves changing colors but I’ve learned you have maybe a 2 week window to catch the best trees colors and that doesn’t always fit with family life! So I know many families will do photos whenever they can make schedules align for everyone.
Now, one thing I learned this year was to talk to your photographer about their editing style. I prefer a very natural, almost untouched, true-color photo, so I was so disappointed when I got the pictures that we took as a family at the beach (different from those of my regular photographer) back with heavy edits and yellow tones. No matter how cute your outfits are and that everyone is in the picture if the final edits are not what you are looking for, then you will not be happy. This was the first time we were able to take photos with my in-laws, so I am thankful for that, but I just wish they had turned out better in the edit!

I love this neutral color scheme if you are doing your family photos in the fall, but maybe on a beach or an open field. Playing off the colors of the tan grass or even like my kids did a few years ago in a studio, these all look so lovely together then, with some pops of soft pink and sea greens.

While we have done a few colors schemes in fall I LOVE all the deep rich tones of caramel, greens and reds that look amazing surrounded by turning leaves (if you have that in your area)!

I also try to throw in a few color schemes that would look good in more of a studio setting where the colors need to be deep and vibrant to stand out against a more neutral background. These include colors like maroon, berry, navy and cream which are easier to find year round!

Bring snacks (like the excellent candy kinds for when kids meltdown…Smarties that melt but don’t get everywhere are great). Remember to take individual photos of each family member; these are great for work headshots or when you need that pic of just one kid. Have FUN but even when a kid is having a meltdown don’t worry about it, those pictures end up being my favs! Miss A in toddler meltdown mode.. but don’t worry a few snacks and she was all better.
